Sinahi/Kalang

This is the second Kalang carved from the giant clam shell found right here in Sa'ipan. As is always the case, it is marked with my spondylus inlay signature attesting that it was carved by me. More importantly, it is a replicated ancient Chamorro Sinahi/Kalang.

Sinahi/Kalang

I recovered the above hima (Bear Paw Giant Clam Shell) from an ancient Chamorro village here on Sa'ipan. The hima has aged and weathered and has seen many moon cycles. How many moon cycles? Your guess is as good as mine. The following Kalang was made from this hima that my ancestors harvested for consumption and eventually to use the material from which their food came from. Many moons later, I was fortunate enough and honored to carve from this very important piece of the ancient Chamorro history.
