Sinahi/Kalang
This Sinahi/Kalang is a very special and significant piece to me and most especially to the people of the Commonwealth of the Northern Marian Islands, Guahan, and to the Chamorro diaspora worldwide. This Sinahi/Kalang has been selected for America's 250 Time Capsule. It will be buried at the Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia on July 4, 2026 and will remain buried and sealed until July 4, 2276.
The following description, which is verbatim, will accompany the Sinahi/Kalang when opened 250 years later in the year 2276:
Chamorro Sinahi/Kalang
Sinahi means "new moon" in Chamorro. Astronomically, it refers to the lunar phase when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, leaving the dark side of the moon facing Earth and nearly invisible to the naked eye. Traditionally, however, the term referred to the first visible crescent of the moon -- its shape resembling the crescent pendant known as the Sinahi. In ancient times, the Sinahi was worn by members of the high caste Matao or Magalahi, and possibly the Acha'ot, as a sign of elevated social status. The Sinahi is also sometimes called "Kalang," a Chamorro word meaning "to hang," which reflects how the crescent pendant hangs when worn.
For me, the Sinahi ---or Kalang --- represents everything that is Chamorro. It speaks to my identity as a descendant of a people known for their mastery: builders of latte houses, skilled canoe builders whose vessels were seaworthy, expert navigators, and accomplished fishermen. This Sinahi reminds me of who my ancestors were and who I continue to be. The spondylus inlay that marks my work is not merely a signature; it symbolizes both the ancient Chamorro money bead and the spondylus bead, bringing together important elements of our tradition. In this way, the Sinahi stands as a complete expression of Chamorro heritage --- an enduring piece of history meant to last for generations.
